Summary

Dr. V. Lane Rawlins, President of the University of North Texas, discusses his association with Chancellor James H. Woodward of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, (UNC Charlotte), which began when both were employed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Rawlins talks about the beginning of Conference USA, and how UNC Charlotte and the University of South Florida became charter members. Tangentially, he explains how governance of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) worked prior to the formation of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), what an "equity conference" is, changes in the governance structure of the NCAA, and how Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference became an equity conference with a shared vote. Dr. Rawlins concludes the interview reflecting on Chancellor Woodward's accomplishments at UNC Charlotte.
