Summary

Dr. Barbara Ann Goodnight, former Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, discusses her thirty year career at the university and focuses on significant events that took place during Chancellor James H. Woodward's tenure. After noting that Chancellor Dean Colvard played an important role in her decision to join the faculty in 1967, and that Bonnie Cone was still influential in getting things achieved on campus, Dr. Goodnight addresses a wide range of strategic topics related to Dr. Woodward's time in office. Subjects discussed include the 1995 Campus Master Plan and its focus on pedestrians; the first campus-wide academic planning document drawn up by Vice Chancellor Philip Dubois and initiated in 1996; and Chancellor Woodward's initiative to bring doctoral programs to the university, fulfilling a foundational goal of UNC Charlotte. Dr. Goodnight discusses the first doctoral programs, noting that they were geared towards spurring economic development in the Charlotte region, and she recalls the awarding of the first PhD at the university, which occurred right before her retirement in 1997. Dr. Goodnight concludes the interview recalling the opening of UNC Charlotte Uptown in the CityFair building and provides reasons why the off-campus center was necessary.
