Summary

In this second of two interviews, brothers Bill and Clyde Mangum recount the experiences of their father, Gordon, who was a race car driver in the 1940s and 1950s. The Mangum brothers recall their father\u2019s love of short track racing in Virginia and the Carolinas. They discuss how he competed in NASCAR Modified Series races and in the rival Dixie Circuit. Mr. Mangum was particularly successful racing cars built by Glen Wood. Mr. Mangum's sons provide additional background on their family's history and share stories from when they worked for the same trucking company with their father. Other topics include changes in racing to improve driver safety, how drivers interact with fans, and how the Mangum brothers founded the Early Dirt Racers group in the late 1980s.
