Scope and Contents

Mary Lynne Calhoun discusses her association with Chancellor James H. Woodward during her career at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; beginning when she was hired as an assistant professor of special education in 1982, continuing with her appointment to the position of dean of the College of Education in 1999, and ending with Chancellor Woodward's retirement in 2005. She focuses on the academic planning process, which led to the first university-wide academic plan in 1996, and the development of doctoral programs at the university during Chancellor Woodward's tenure. In particular she notes the interdisciplinary aspect of some of the programs that helped to pave the way for their future approval as PhD programs.

Biographical Note

Mary Lynne Calhoun was a 67-year-old woman at the time of interview, which took place at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1945. She was educated at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and the University of Georgia, and was employed as a professor and dean of the College of Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
