Scope and Contents
Dr. Wayne A. Walcott discusses his role at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte under former Chancellor James H. Woodward. Dr. Walcott came to the university as an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences in 1970 and was chair of the department by the time Dr. Woodward became chancellor in 1989. Dr. Walcott discusses his role in the Master Planning Task Force. He comments on some of the other members of the task force, and provides insight into the amount of detail needed to produce a campus-wide plan for growth. Other topics discussed include: his role in academic planning (and how it changed over time) with credit given to then Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Philip L. Dubois for codifying the process, the role of the provost at UNC Charlotte, the development of the first doctoral programs at the university, and new campus capital construction. He concludes the interview reflecting on the success of the Master Plan and Academic Plan, agreeing that they have done what they were intended to do.

Dr. Wayne A. Walcott’s interview took place at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was born in Plainwell, Michigan. He was educated at the University of Illinois and was employed at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1970 as a professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, rising through the academic ranks from assistant professor (1970-1988), to department chair (1988-2000), and culminating with the title of senior associate provost (2000-2008) which he held until he retired.
