Scope and Contents

Dr. David R. Goldfield, the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), discusses his role as the Faculty Athletics Representative for the university to Conference USA and what the role entails. Dr. Goldfield discusses how UNC Charlotte became a charter member of Conference USA in 1995 and the effect it had on increasing the national stature of the university. Dr. Goldfield also speaks about the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and how it evolved over time. In particular he talks about his tenure on the Executive Board of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association of the NCAA, including one term he served as president. Additionally, Dr. Goldfield reflects on the university's transition from Conference USA to the Atlantic-10 in 2005. In conclusion he discusses attempts to start a football program during Chancellor Jim Woodward's tenure, and explains why those attempts were not successful.

Biographical Note

Dr. David R. Goldfield was a 68-year-old man at the time of interview, which took place at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1944. He was educated at Brooklyn College, CUNY; and the University of Maryland; and was employed as the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 1982.
