 Collection
Identifier: UA0053

Scope and Contents

This collection of records from the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte consists of the following three series and a single file of annual reports: Faculty Minutes, Departments, and Committees. It contains records such as faculty minutes (1968-1980), memoranda, meeting notes, and annual reports from the College and from its departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.

Of the four departments, Mathematics is the most widely represented in this collection with covered topics including but not limited to graduate studies, a computer science degree, tenure criteria, and a department name change.

Some of the committees represented are Academic Policy, College Curriculum, Computer Users Advisory, Faculty Development, and Library, all from the 1970s.

Not included in this collection are records after the College was merged with two other colleges to become the College of Arts and Sciences. For more information, see the Administrative History Note, and for records after 1980, see the Related Materials Note.

Administrative History

The College of Science and Mathematics is the midway administrative unit in a string of structural changes. In 1968, the academic structure of UNC Charlotte consisted of seven Divisions, one of which was the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Included in this division were the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. In 1971, the structure changed to an organization by Colleges. The College of Science and Mathematics was one of these Colleges and included the same four departments that the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences had. In 1980, the College joined with the College of Humanities and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences to become the College of Arts and Sciences. It retained this name until additional structural changes occurred in 2008 and it became the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The records in this collection are from the period in which the unit was known as the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and as the College of Science and Mathematics. For records after this time, see the Related Materials Note.
