Scope and Contents
This collection contains official minutes of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and records originally held by the Executive Assistant and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees in the Chancellor’s Office. Among these records are correspondence, agendas, endowment fund material, regulations, resolutions, handbooks, reports, retreat documentation, and material concerning the University’s interaction with the University of North Carolina System President and Board of Governors. In addition, there are correspondence and minutes of the various other Board committees and photographs of trustees and of Chancellor’s Dubois’s installation. Other topics covered include commencement, honorary degrees, and the Distinguished Service Award.

This collection is divided into the following twelve series, most of which are arranged chronologically: Agendas; Minutes and Accompanying Material; Committees; Resolution and Awards; Appraisals and Reports; Correspondence; Retreats, Conferences, and Other Meetings; Commencement; Trustee Notebooks and Handbooks; University of North Carolina System; Photographs; and Alphabetical Subject Files. Prior to these series are two general files explaining the Board’s role and summarizing its actions from 1972 to 1999.

Administrative History
Prior to 1972 the campuses in the UNC Consolidated University did not have individual boards of trustees. In 1972 higher education in North Carolina was re-organized, and the University of North Carolina expanded to include the “formerly black” campuses. The UNC Board of Governors was established, and the individual campuses set up their own boards of trustees.

Processing Information
Files were kept in the physical order in which they were found at the time of processing and/or merging in December 2017. Original file titles were maintained. Intellectually, the files were reordered and grouped into series to create an organized inventory for the finding aid. Processing was done by Olivia Eanes, archival assistant.
