Scope and Contents

This collection consists of founding documents, minutes, and other records of the Staff Council at UNC Charlotte, originally known as the Staff Organization. Included are the constitution from 1976, executive committee minutes (1977-2006, 2009-2015), correspondence, the secretary’s record books (1992-2007), and a 2005 resolution honoring Chancellor James Woodward on his retirement. Minutes beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year are also available on the council’s website: https://stafforg.charlotte.edu/meetings/archived-meeting-minutes

The collection is divided into two series and two single files. The first series contains executive committee minutes and correspondence and the 1976 constitution. The second series consists of the secretary’s record books.

Administrative History

Initially constituted in 1976 as the Staff Organization, the representative body for both full-time and part-time staff at UNC Charlotte became known as the Staff Council around 2008. Receiving its authority from the Chancellor, the Staff Council’s purpose is “to create and provide a more harmonious working environment” and “to bring to the attention of the administration matters of general staff concern” (“Purpose and Authority of Organization,” https://stafforg.charlotte.edu/, accessed November 30, 2017). Beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year, the council’s meeting minutes are made available on their website.

Processing Information

Reprocessing of the collection was done by Olivia Eanes, Archival Assistant, November 2017.

Before reprocessing, the Secretary's Record Books contained were housed in four accordion folders, each containing multiple years with sticky notes marking the beginning of each year. The records in these folders were placed in archival folders with one year per folder, and the sticky notes were removed. The original folders were divided as follows, possibly corresponding to the contents of original binders: 1992-1996; 1997-1999; 2000-2003; 2004-2007.
