Counseling and Health Services records

 Collection
Identifier: UA0405

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of records from two of the three departments within the Counseling and Health Services unit at UNC Charlotte, namely the Counseling Center and the Student Health Center. Each department’s records are arranged in a separate series.

The Counseling Center series consists of one file relating to the 1970-1971 Faculty Workshop to Facilitate Faculty-Student Interaction, which was funded by the Danforth Foundation. Materials include correspondence, evaluations, reports, and speeches given during the workshop.

The Student Health Center series contains material from the period when the Brocker Health Center was operational, including annual reports, a 1985 self-study, and a report titled “Alcohol and Other Drug Use among University of North Carolina – Charlotte Undergraduate Students.” (March 1990). The annual reports range from fiscal year 1989-1990 to 2003-2004, with the exception of 1997-1998.

Administrative History

As of 2018, Counseling and Health Services is a unit within the Division of Student Affairs that is made up of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Student Health Center, and the Center for Wellness Promotion. According to the CAPS website, the Counseling and Heatlh Services unit exists “to provide wellness-related programs and services to UNC Charlotte students” (https://caps.charlotte.edu/about-us, accessed 24 August 2022).

Known as the Counseling Center until 2017, the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services was established in the late 1960s with Ronald B. “Sam” Simono as the director. In 2003, David Spano became the Director of the Counseling Center and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Programs and Services, at which point the Counseling Center became part of Counseling and Health Services.

A 1969 memo from Dr. Simono reveals that the center provided counseling, psychological testing, and information services and that both students and faculty/staff members could “seek assistance in resolving personal problems, exploring educational and vocational goals, and making more effective use of verbal and quantitative skills.” (See Chancellor--Subject Files, 1969-1973: Box 21 [G02.059.04.03], Folder 227.) In the early 2000s, select testing services were transferred to the University Career Center.

The following history of the Student Health Center has been taken directly from its website: “The original Student Health Center opened on March 24, 1971 in the Brocker Health Service building, named in honor of Edith P. Brocker, first dean of UNC Charlotte’s School of Nursing. The growth of the university necessitated a larger building and on October 10, 2007, the new Student Health Center opened. At nearly 32,000 square feet, the new building is almost triple the size of the Brocker building and features 21 medical exam rooms including two negative pressure rooms that can be used to prevent the spread of infectious bacteria. The Brocker building has been renamed Memorial Hall and is home to the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC” (http://studenthealth.uncc.edu/general-information/about-shc, accessed 2 May 2017).
