Administrative History

Recreational services at UNC Charlotte were first offered through student affairs when the university's gymnasium (now known as Belk Gym) was completed in 1970. Students could participate in "a comprehensive program of intramural sports...offered throughout the year and designed to help the student develop life-long physical fitness activities." It included team, dual, and individual sports for men and women.

Initially, the department was only known as intramurals. It was first was referred to as Intramural and Recreational Services in the 1997-1999 catalog, and was was part of the Division of Student Affairs. The name was changed to just Recreational Services in 2007.

In addition to intramural sports, Recreational Services is responsible for operating campus sports clubs, fitness and wellness classes, and open recreation in the fitness centers. It also hosted three public special events each year: RecFest, a 5k run/walk, and a spring golf tournament.

As of 2022, recreational facilties include Belk Gym, the Calisthenic Outdoor Recreation Equipment (C.O.R.E.), the Hayes Field complex, the North Recreational Field complex, and the University Recreation Center.
