Administrative History

Educational Support Services was created in 1986 and was initally led by Dr. James W. Selby, III, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. It was a division of Academic Affairs.

The mission of Educational Support Services was to assist students with their academic programs by facilitating students' transitions to the University, enabaling students to master the curriculum, and providing academically enriching activities for all students.

Educational Support Services initially was made up of several units (some preexisting and some newly created): Academic Assessment Services, Academic Support for Black Students, Athletic Academic Counseling, Center for International Studies, Learning Assistance Services (which was comprised of Disabled Student Services, the Learning Center, and Supplemental Instruction), Office of Experiential Learning, and the Writing Resources Center. By 1993, Educational Support Services had been reorganized into new organizational units.
