Identifier: UA0781

Scope and Contents

The Department of Kinesiology Records consists of minutes from departmental faculty meetings and feasibility studies as well as records from both parent and children units in the organizational structure of the university, such as the College of Nursing and Health Professions, College of Health and Human Services, and Athletic Training Education Program. College and university faculty handbooks, various surveys, master and strategic plans, and policies are also included.

The collection is divided into the following four series: Minutes; Handbooks and Policies; Studies and Reports; Plans. Files are arranged chronologically within each series.

The Minutes series consists of minutes of the Department of Kinesiology faculty meetings from 2001 to 2008.

The Handbooks and Policies series includes faculty handbooks for UNC Charlotte (1992) and for the College of Nursing and Health Professions (1996, 1998). Also included are summer usage guidelines for the Student Activity Center and Belk Gymnasium and UNC Charlotte’s tenure policies (1992).

The Studies and Reports series contains two subseries, one for annual and self-study reports from the Athletic Training Education Program and one for post-graduation surveys from the College of Health and Human Services. Also included are single files containing feasibility and facilities studies, survey results, and other task force reports on topics such as employer satisfaction, graduate student advising, recreation facilities, and the 49er Finish Program.

The Plans series consists of the request to authorize the establishment of a health fitness degree program (1992), a strategic plan for the College of Nursing and Health Professions (2000), a marketing plan for the Clinical Exercise Physiology graduate degree program (2005), and a master plan for Belk Gymnasium (2010).

Administrative History

What is known in 2018 as the Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte began as the Department of Health and Physical Education in the 1968-1969 academic year as part of the College of Arts and Sciences. The following year, the university’s academic structure changed to divisions, and the department became part of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences until the 1971-1972 academic year when the structure reverted to colleges and the department was housed in the College of Human Development and Learning. In 1985, this college became the College of Education and Allied Professions, and in 1995 the name changed again to the College of Education, but not before the department name also changed to the Department of Health Promotion and Kinesiology in time for the 1993-1995 university catalog printing. The department moved once again by 1997 to the College of Nursing and Health Professions. By the 2003-2005 catalog printing, the department had been renamed Department of Kinesiology and reported to the College of Health and Human Services, as it does to the present.
