Administrative History

The position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Relations was established in 1966, just after UNC Charlotte became the fourth campus of the University of North Carolina. Between 1949 and 1965, issues regarding student affairs were handled by the president of Charlotte College, Bonnie E. Cone. Cone continued to handle student-related issues while serving as acting-chancellor of UNC Charlotte (1965-1966). In 1966 she was named the first Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Relations, a position she held until 1973.

From 1973 to 1974 Harold Clarke, the University Registrar, served as the Chairman of the Student Affairs Division during the search for Miss Cone’s successor. When Douglas Orr, Jr. succeeded Miss Cone in 1974, the position became the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Below is a complete list of Vice Chancellors with their terms of service.

Arrangement

Originally processed as 19 separate collections, each of which consisted of alphabetical subject files from overlapping date ranges, this collection resulted from merging these accessions into a single collection. The physical order within each accession was kept intact with the exception that any restricted files were pulled from each accession and boxed together at the end of the merged collection.

The intellectual arrangement (inventory) was created by integrating the files into a single alphabetical listing and pulling out like files into series and subseries. Any remaining files were left in an Alphabetical Subject Files series, divided into the following five subseries: A-C; D-G; H-M; N-R; S-Z.

Processing Information

This collection was initially received over time in 19 accessions, each of which was processed as a separate collection and consisted of alphabetical subject files. In the fall of 2017, these accessions were merged into a single collection. See Arrangement note for more information.

Original file titles were generally maintained. Some standardization of titles was performed.

Folder numbers that already existed were maintained, resulting in multiples of each number in the merged collection. No folder numbers were given to folders processed during the merge. Among those accessions that already had folder numbers, the following folders do not exist: 21, 77, 102, 103, 106, 107, 108, 118, 120, 125, 134, 140, 144, 166 in Boxes 25-44; 79, 80 in Box 71; 2 in Box 109; 52, 54 in Box 125; 15, 16 in Box 126; 30 in Box 127; and 14 in Box 128.
