College of Humanities records

 Collection
Identifier: UA0057

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of records from the office of the Dean of the College of Humanities and from various departments within the college including those of Afro-American and African Studies, Creative Arts, Foreign Languages, History, and Philosophy and Religion (later split into separate Philosophy and Religious Studies departments). Materials largely consist of minutes, but some agendas, memoranda, and correspondence are included as well. Also in the collection are faculty minutes (1968-1980), files from the Faculty President (1976-1980), and a 1978 Faculty Attitude Survey. Records from the Honors Program Committee and a report from the Teacher-Education Committee can also be found in this collection.

Aside from the Dean’s Office file, the collection is divided into three series: Departments, Faculty, and Committees.

Not included are records from the College after it was joined with two other colleges to become the College of Arts and Sciences in 1980. See the Administrative History Note and Related Materials Note for more information.

Administrative History

In 1968, the academic structure of UNC Charlotte consisted of seven Divisions, one of which was the Division of Humanities. In 1971, the structure shifted to the College system including the College of Humanities and seven other colleges. The year 1980 brought a major structural change with the College of Humanities, the College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences being combined into a single College of Arts and Sciences. The name of this College was later changed to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2008.
