Historical Note
The Health Services Research Academy was established in the spring of 1993. Its mission was to foster activities related to health services research within the UNC Charlotte community and the regional health care community. The original name for the academy was the Health Issues Academy, sometimes referred to as the Academy for Health Issues.
The Academy was run by a steering committee, elected by members of the Academy. The first two co-directors were Barbara Carper (Nursing) and Jerry Pyle (Geography and Earth Sciences). Membership was open to all members of the UNC Charlotte community and members of the health services community outside the University.
Activities of the Academy included maintaining a speaker’s bureau, developing an inventory of faculty scholarly activities related to health and health care, assisting and collaborating on funding proposals for grants and other activities, and creating expert panels to facilitate research and contacts with the broader health care community.
Academies were established at UNC Charlotte in 1987 to adequately recognize interdisciplinary scholarly groupings on campus, and to actively encourage the creation of new groupings.
