Administrative History

The position of Dean of Students was created in 1965 to serve as liaison between the students, the faculty, and university administration. Initially, the dean handled issues concerning student activities and organizations, including the administration of the college athletic program. In 1967 the Dean of Students was placed under the newly created Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Relations. At that time, the Dean of Students continued to oversee intramural sports, while college athletics became a separate department. The duties of the Office of the Dean of Students have continued to focus on the students and their relationship with the University. The office is responsible for orientation, minority student support services, student organizations, Greek affairs, and judicial affairs.

Arrangement

Originally received in twelve accessions, these records have been merged intellectually into a single collection. For the most part, physically each accession has been kept in sequential boxes, and files have been left in their original order. Intellectually, however, the files have been rearranged from multiple groupings of alphabetical subject files into the following eleven series to aid in discovery:

Administration and Personnel; Correspondence; Women’s and Minority Programs and Racial Issues; Legal, Disciplinary, Health, and Safety Issues; Student Government Association and Student Court; Student, Residence, and Commuter Life; Student Advising, Mentoring, and Orientation; Media, Publications, and Student Media Board; Cone Center and Student Union Board; Honor Societies, Honors, and Awards; Assorted Alphabetical Subject Files.

See the Scope and Contents note for each series for further arrangement information.
