Records and photographs pertaining to the 35th and 50th anniversaries of the Center and to Bonnie Cone’s 90th birthday can also be found in this collection, including a photograph of the first three chancellors of the University (Colvard, Fretwell, and Woodward) with Bonnie Cone.

Administrative History and Structure

The Cone University Center (CUC) originated in 1962 as the College Center, built in part with funding from county bonds. Beginning the following year, the Center was overseen by its first director, Don MacKay. Additions to the building were completed in 1966 and 1976, funded by student fees, and the Center was dedicated in honor of Bonnie E. Cone upon her retirement from the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Community Relations in 1973.

Keith Wassum became the fourth director of CUC in November 1983, followed by Jim Hoppa as the fifth in 1995.

The Cone Center housed the Student Union and the Multicultural Resource Center (begun in 2001) until a separate Student Union building was constructed in 2009.

As of 2017, the Cone University Center falls under Student Union, Activities, and Recreation (SUAR) in the Division of Student Affairs. According to its webpage, it “is the community center of the University for all members of the University: students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and guests. It is not just a building; it is also an organization and a program” (https://cone.charlotte.edu/: accessed 6 September 2022). Among the offices housed in the Cone Center are Conference, Reservations, and Event Services (CRES), Venture, Honors College, Center for Graduate Life, and Chartwell’s Catering and Marketing offices.

Abstract

This collection contains administrative records of the Cone University Center from 1974 to 2009 as well as audiovisual materials and video logs from Niner Telecommunications Network (NTN) documenting numerous campus events from the early 1990s through 2007. Also included are records and photographs relating to the 35th and 50th anniversaries of the Cone Center, including documents recounting the Center’s history, and to Bonnie Cone’s 90th birthday.

Arrangement

The first three accessions contained administrative files and were grouped in the Administrative Files—Cone University Center series. Because no discernable order existed, an intellectual arrangement was imposed by the processing archivist. Physically, however, the original order was maintained.

The second series, Video Materials—Niner Telecommunications Network (NTN) and Campus Events Office (Student Union), contains half of an accession, the other half of which was processed into the Student Media Records (UA0054). The video logs are listed first in the inventory, followed by the tapes in their original order, as numbered by the office of origin.

The third series, originally an artificial collection, was left in the order in which it was filed at the time of accessioning.

Processing Information

This collection was received as five accessions, which were initially treated as five separate collections. In October 2017, the processed accessions were merged into a single collection, and the unprocessed accessions were processed and added to this collection. The fifth accession, which corresponds to the “35th and 50th Anniversaries” series, was created as an artificial collection from material found in the manuscript stacks.

For the most part, file titles were maintained, although some were standardized.

In October 2017, approximately half a linear foot of purchase orders, check requests, contracts, invoices, and similar materials were discarded.
