Requests for Authorization to Plan New Academic Programs
Scope and Contents
The Course and Curriculum Files series is arranged in the following three subseries: Requests for Authorization to Plan New Degree Programs; Course and Curriculum Proposals; and Consent Calendar.
The Requests for Authorization to Plan New Degree Programs subseries contains records created in the process of applying for permission to plan and create new academic programs from 1979 to 2000. It is arranged with general files at the beginning in chronological order, followed by degree-specific files in alphabetical order.
The Course and Curriculum Proposals subseries consist of records created in the process of proposing the creation or revision of academic programs from 1988 to 2014. It contains a further subseries for each of the following colleges: College of Arts and Architecture, Belk College of Business, College of Computing and Informatics, College of Education, William States Lee College of Engineering; College of Health and Human Services; College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Also included are eight files that relate to other structural units such as the Graduate School, Honors College, and University College.
The college titles indicate the colleges’ names at the time of the most recent files each contains. Within each college’s subseries, files are arranged alphabetically by degree program. Within the programs, files are arranged undergraduate first, then graduate, then any minors or certificates and chronologically within each of these groupings. This arrangement was imposed in the inventory by the processing assistant to aid researchers’ discovery of files. Physically, the files were kept in the order in which they were received, which was generally by department. Thus, the physical arrangement of files will provide an idea of what departments the programs were based in. For example, Arabic is listed with the A’s in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences but physically found with other files from the Languages and Culture Studies Department. It should be noted that the organizational structure of academic departments has changed numerous times in the university’s history. To find what college a department or degree program was in at a given time, consult the university catalogs (available online through DigitalNC) or archives staff.
The Consent Calendar subseries consists of records pertaining to the approval of proposed creations or revisions of academic programs from 1987 to 2000. Files are arranged chronologically.
