Historical Note

Mecklenburg Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Political Action Committee (MeckPAC) was founded in 1998 as an organization to advance LGBT issues in Mecklenburg County. The impetus for the organization's founding was a desire to oust the "Gang of Five", a group of five County Commissioners who stripped public funding of the Arts and Science Council after they staged the controversial play "Angels in America" in Charlotte. MeckPac has continued over the years to attempt to fulfill its mission of mobilizing the LGBT community and its allies in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to participate in city and county elections, to educate city and county officials about issues of importance to the LGBT community and to hold city and county elected officials accountable for their votes on those issues. MeckPac is registered with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections and is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization.
