Loney was an enslaved man in North Carolina. On January 2, 1865 he was approximately 27 years old. This document is a bill of sale dated January 2, 1865 for Loney. The buying enslaver was N. A. Wingate & Co. of Charlotte, North Carolina; and the selling enslaver was J. A. Bisaner, of Lincolnton, North Carolina. Loney was sold for $6,000 in Confederate currency.

The value of a Confederate dollar was about four cents in comparison to Union currency. This bill of sale also serves as a letter to Bisaner’s wife (unnamed here), instructing her to deliver Loney to his new enslavers.

Biographical / Historical

Loney was approximately 27 years old at the time of document creation, January 2, 1862. No additional biographical information is known about Loney.

Joseph Alexander Bisaner (1837-1920) was the son of Jacob Bisaner and Sarah Jetton of Lincolnton, NC. He married Alice McClellan Tatum and had five children with her. Joseph had moved to Marietta, Georgia by 1870 and later moved to Murphy, NC where he lived until his death.
