Dr. Jose Baxeres De Alzugaray (1866 - June 12, 1937) was an Argentina-born American chemist who was most noted for his pioneering work in the development of vanadium steel. Son of Dr. Baxeres Torres, Madrid's Ambassador to Russia, and Mercedes de Alzugaray and brother of Eduardo and Maria Baxeres de Alzugaray, he studied under private tutors in Spain, London, Paris, St. Petersburg and at the Unviersity of Geneva and the Sorbonne. He married Lola Lansdale of Washington, D.C. She was a sister of Ella Hargrove Sayre Sullivan Robinson. Before coming to this country in 1905 he was chemist for the Vanadium Co., Ltd., of London, and there produced the first pound of vanadium steel ever manufactured.
