This collection consists of papers from throughout Jose Baxeres de Alzugaray's career as a chemist. Includes documents related to gold mining process, mineralogy, ore separation and vanadium steel. Also contains some personal material including correspondence of his wife, Lola Baxeres de Alzugaray, family photographs and stocks.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Jose Baxeres De Alzugaray (1866 - June 12, 1937) was an Argentina-born American chemist who was most noted for his pioneering work in the development of vanadium steel. Son of Dr. Baxeres Torres, Madrid's Ambassador to Russia, and Mercedes de Alzugaray and brother of Eduardo and Maria Baxeres de Alzugaray, he studied under private tutors in Spain, London, Paris, St. Petersburg and at the Unviersity of Geneva and the Sorbonne. He married Lola Lansdale of Washington, D.C. She was a sister of Ella Hargrove Sayre Sullivan Robinson. Before coming to this country in 1905 he was chemist for the Vanadium Co., Ltd., of London, and there produced the first pound of vanadium steel ever manufactured. He also produced the first synthetic ruby. He was called the "authority on war vessel armor" by The New York Times and the scientific community, and is remembered as an "early advocate of radium in cancer treatment" and for the improvement of the electric furnace and its products. De Alzugaray applied for and was awarded several patents in the area of metallurgy. De Alzugaray died in New York of a heart ailment June 12, 1937 at the age of 71.
