Biographical / Historical

Rotary International is one of the largest service organizations in the world with over 1.2 million members and 34,000 clubs around the globe. It was first established in 1910. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster: First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to service society; Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; and Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. The Rotary Club of Charlotte (Charlotte Rotary Club) is the oldest and largest club in district 7680 which serves fourteen counties, including Mecklenburg, in the west-central region of North Carolina. Each county has at least one Rotary club. There are close to 60 clubs with around several thousand members who share similar values and are dedicated to serving the needs of their communities and helping others around the world. District 7680 was established July 1, 1992. Charlotte Rotary Club was one of the first in the state of N.C. Organized October 3rd of 1916, it was officially chartered December 1st of that same year. Assigned club number 256, it began with 48 charter members. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County grew to around 20 Clubs in district 7680 by 2015. Among them are the Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club and the Charlotte North Rotary Club. The Dilworth Rotary Club was chartered October, 1948, district 767, charter #7076. Rotary’s motto is “Service above Self.” The club is the cornerstone of Rotary, where the most meaningful work is carried out. All effective Rotary clubs are responsible for four key elements: sustaining or increasing their membership base, participating in service projects that benefit their own community and those in other countries, supporting The Rotary Foundation of RI financially and through program participation, and developing leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club level. Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based: Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs. The “FOUR-WAY TEST” is used for establishing sound relationships and activities within Rotary and in all matters family, work and community-oriented. The four questions are, “Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
