Historical Note

Southern Engineering Company was founded by Leslie G. Berry, Sr., in Charlotte, NC, in 1911. The company fabricated the structural steel used in the construction of area power plants and commercial buildings such as the original Charlotte Coliseum. Their work could be seen in local bridges and other structures in the Piedmont and the Southeast. One of the first architects who worked at Southern Engineering was Martin Evans Boyer, Jr. who left the company to open his own design firm in 1920.
