Historical Note

In 1994, Frances C. Kerr (Mrs. George) was asked to lead a group of Myers Park Baptist Church (Charlotte, NC) members to examine matters of sexuality as it pertained to the mission and covenant of the church. Mrs. Kerr had an M.ED in counseling and was the mother of a lesbian in that community and had been a member of the church since 1957. By 2002, the Board of Deacons of MPBC accepted a proposal to change the covenant to read, "We covenant to be a community of God's creation and affirm that we are open to all and closed to none." This was the result of the committee's work over the previous 8 years.
