Biographical note

Starting in 1988 Linda Lawyer authored a monthly column titled “The Soft Spot,” which was published in the Charlotte based newspaper, Q Notes under the pseudonym Ann Michele. The initial impetus for the column was to redress an imbalance in the content of Q Notes, which had previously been concerned with predominantly gay male issues. “The Soft Spot” combined uplifting and inspirational musings, local political reflections, reviews for local music concerts, promptings for gay rights activism, and a running commentary on emerging local gay and lesbian organizations. In particular Lawyer documented the growth and activities of the Queen City Friends (QCF), a Lesbian organization, whose objective she describes as, “to provide a non-structured, non-threatening social setting for women to meet each other.” (The Soft Spot, January 1988.)
