Historical Note

Charlotte Pride presents the annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer (LGBTQ) Pride festival and other events in the Queen City. The annual festival is the largest LGBTQ Pride event in the Carolinas and the largest between Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

Founded in 2001, Charlotte Pride, Inc., presented the city’s annual Pride events from 2001-2005. Similar Pride activities flew under the banner of “Pride Charlotte” from 2006-2012. In 2012, the event attracted more than 45,000 people to Uptown Charlotte for a two-day festival just one week before the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

In January 2013, longtime volunteers from 2006-2012 reactivated the dormant Charlotte Pride, Inc., in order to more successfully focus on the organization’s core mission. In August 2013, Charlotte Pride hosted its largest and most successful event yet, also hosting the Bank of America Charlotte Pride Parade, the first LGBTQ Pride Parade in Charlotte since 1994.

Charlotte Pride’s organizing committee is formed from an all-volunteer committee which presented successful “Pride Charlotte” festivals with The LGBT Community Center of Charlotte from 2006-2012 and other volunteers who worked to present local Pride festivities from 2001 to 2005.
