Scope and Contents

The collection contains letters to Arthur Grady Hemby Jr. and Samuel Robert Hemby during the times that they served in the Navy. The dates of the letters range from October 19, 1940 to November 23, 1952. The largest portion of the correspondence consists of letters from Mary Blanche Dempster Hemby. Most of the letters from the family members are regarding home life in Charlotte while the brothers were serving. There are also some other miscellaneous items in the collection that belonged to the brothers, including a small Bible and schematic drawings of a submarine Arthur Grady Hemby Jr. served on.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Grady Hemby Jr. and Samuel Robert Hemby are two of the sons of Arthur Grady Hemby Sr. and Mary Blanche Dempster Hemby. Arthur Grady Hemby Jr. was born on October 9, 1919 and died on September 20, 2007. Samuel Robert Hemby was born on March 6 1927 and died on October 7, 2002. They had three other siblings: Joanna Rebecca Hemby (December 7, 1922 – November 22, 2007), Margaret Virginia Hemby, also known as Peggy, (April 7, 1924 – November 13, 2010), and Annie Elizabeth Hemby (February 24, 1930 – present). Arthur Grady Hemby Jr. and Samuel Robert Hemby served in the U.S. Navy, and this collection contains correspondence to the brothers from family and friends while they were serving.
