Biographical / Historical

Victor B. Shaw was born in Charlotte on January 20, 1888. He attended public schools in Charlotte, counting among his classmates Frank Porter Graham, president of the University of North Carolina (1932-49) and U.S. Senator (1949-50). During the 1910s, he worked as superintendent of the Ford Motor Assembly Plant in Charlotte. Shaw joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I, serving to second lieutenant at his discharge in 1919. He inherited his father's business in Charlotte, Shaw Tires, in 1920. Shaw served as chair of the Mecklenburg County Civil Service Board (1942-44) and the Mecklenburg County Welfare Board (1958-61). In 1949, Shaw was elected mayor of Charlotte, a post he held until 1953. He retired in 1956. He married Elsie Babbitt of Franklinville, N.Y., and they had two children, Victor Jr. and Elsie. Shaw died in Charlotte on August 11, 1966.
