Historical Note

The first chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in North Carolina, the Mecklenburg Chapter was organized in Charlotte on September 29, 1898. Mrs. Edward Dilworth Latta and Mrs. Stonewall (Mary Anna) Jackson were influential in the chapter's organization. Jackson was elected the first regent of the chapter. The chapter meets monthly and sponsors many community projects. In addition to patriotic activities, the Mecklenburg DAR is involved with charitable organizations such as the American Red Cross, Crossnore School, and the Hezekiah Alexander House. They also work with Native Americans, veterans, and local college scholarships. The chapter also assists in the placement of historic markers in the county. On the state level, the Mecklenburg Chapter has provided officers and hosted meetings.

Contains membership applications, including that of Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, widow of General Stonewall Jackson; minutes of chapter and executive board meetings; histories of the chapter and the state organization; and a list of tombstone inscriptions in Settlers Cemetery in uptown Charlotte.

The collection is arranged into the following four series:

Membership Applications, Minutes (1898-1993), Subject Files (1927-1993) and Scrapbooks (1955-1967).
