Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised almost entirely of material created or received by Ray as a result of his service on the County Commission. In addition, the papers contain material on Ray's earlier service on the Charlotte Hospital Authority and his later involvement with the Mental Health Authority.

Biographical / Historical

William Thomas "Tom" Ray was born in Charlotte on November 27, 1936. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill (A.B., 1957; LL.B., 1960) and Cambridge University (B.A., 1962). A member of Phi Delta Phi, he was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 1962. Ray began his legal career with Cansler and Lockhart of Charlotte. He served on the Charlotte Selective Service Board and on the Charlotte Housing Authority (1972-77). First elected to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners in 1978, Ray served as chair during his second term (1980-82) and as vice-chair during his final term (1982-84). He is married to Margaret Whitton Ray [see Margaret Whitton Ray Papers].

Abstract

Papers of a Charlotte lawyer and politician, primarily documenting his membership on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (1978-84). Includes campaign files and material reflecting his special interests in human services, mental health, and roads. Also includes material from his earlier service on the Charlotte Housing Authority (1971-76).
