Scope and Contents
Papers found in the home of John H. and Evelyn G. Alexander (Intersection of Mallard Creek and Mallard Creek Church Rds.). Moyers had purchased the house and all its contents. The collection consists primarily of personal letters written between John H. Alexander and Evelyn G. Galloway while Alexander served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Also included are correspondence written to both of them by family and friends during the same time period.

Biographical note
John Henry Alexander was born to Thomas Taylor and Mary Joye Alexander on April 20, 1920 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant with the 2077th Engineering Aviation Utility Detachment. He married Evelyn Galloway in June 1945 and returned to the Mallard Creek area of Mecklenburg County after being discharged from the army. Alexander was a member of the Derita Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of the Mallard Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He died in Charlotte, N.C. on March 16, 2006 at the age of 86.
Evelyn Gywn Galloway Alexander was born to Harry Young and Laura Query Galloway on May 1, 1923 in Charlotte, N.C. Galloway graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Education and went on to teach for 39 years in the Cabarrus County School System. She died in Charlotte, N.C. on March 7, 1995 at the age of 72.

Abstract

Arrangement
Organized into two series (with some subseries): Series I. John H. Alexander correspondence, 1941-1945. Series II. Evelyn Galloway Alexander correspondence, 1938-1946. Series I contains John Alexander's personal correspondence. Subseries A contains Alexander's letters to Evelyn Galloway and Subseries B contains letters written to Alexander by family and friends. Series II contains Evelyn Galloway Alexander's personal correspondence. Subseries A contains Galloway's letters to John Alexander. Subseries B contains letters written to Galloway by members of the armed forces and Subseries C contains letters written to Galloway by family and friends.
Custodial History
The papers were acquired by Christianne and Michael Moyers through purchase of the John Henry and Evelyn Galloway house and its contents.
