Biographical / Historical

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre opened in 1932 as a replacement for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, which had burned down in 1926. Located in Stratford-upon-Avon, it is a venue that seats 1,040 plus people and is designed to recreate the environment of a traditional Shakespearean play. It is a one-room theatre which offers the audience a more intimate experience. In November 2010, the Royal Shakespeare Theater underwent a renovation project entitled the Transformation Project, which brought the stage further out and closer to the audience and created new public spaces, a restaurant and an observation tower.
