Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of 58 items consisting of newspapers, clippings, plans, portfolios, and memorabilia. The Odell Papers contain no original drawings or correspondence. Primarily biographical material about a prominent Charlotte architect and advertising material relating to Odell Associates, Inc., the firm he founded in 1940. Also includes central area and cultural plans for Charlotte and Raleigh, a film documenting the opening of the Charlotte Coliseum/Ovens Auditorium complex in 1955, and a pictorial map of historic sites in Cabarrus County.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Gould Odell Jr. was born in Concord, N.C., on November 22, 1913. He studied at Duke University (1930 31), then transferred to Cornell University, where he received a bachelors of architecture degree (1935). Odell continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1940, he founded Odell Associates in Charlotte. During World War II, he served in the US Army Corps of Engineers. Odell served as president of the American Institute of Architects (1964/ 65). He died in Charlotte on April 21, 1988.
