Scope and Contents

Collection consists of four VHS and two U-Matic videotapes of interviews conducted between 1975 and 1989 by UNC Charlotte Professor Nish Jamgotch. The interviewees are V.M. Berezhkov, an interpreter for Stalin and Molotov at conferences with Churchill and Roosevelt during World War II and later a professor at Occidental College; Saul Mendlovitz and Igor Khripunov, experts on nuclear security and arms control; and Dean Rusk, Secretary of State under presidents Kennedy and Johnson. The interviews cover issues concerning United States foreign policy, especially U.S.-Soviet relations, and arms control. Correspondence related to the acquisition and the content of the videos is included.

Biographical / Historical

Political science professor emeritus Nish Jamgotch, Jr. taught at UNC Charlotte from 1966 to 1993 and was the recipient of the university's North Carolina National Bank Award for Excellence in Teaching. His studies focused on international politics, United States foreign policy, and Soviet and East Europe affairs. Published works include Soviet-East European dialogue and Thinking the thinkable. As a member of the American Committee for East-West Accord, he developed a multidisciplinary undergraduate course called Investment in Human Survival that stressed the major challenges and threats to humanity and both intellectual and political commitments to elevate the quality of life in our time.
