Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a small assortment of papers generated by the City of Charlotte concerning Freedom Park and the Charlotte Coliseum; and a much larger assortment of photographs, mainly of city officials (mayors and city council members from the mid-1960s to the late 1990s). The collection also includes photographs of street scenes (some dating to the 1940s), cityscapes and skylines of Charlotte, as well as city employees at work.

Biographical / Historical

First known as Charlotte Corporate Communications, the organization changed its name to Corporate Communications and Marketing and later, in 2015-2016, to Charlotte Communications and Marketing. As a division of the City Manager's Office, CC&M works closely with communications and support staff across the organization. CC&M leads the city's media relations, marketing and internal communications, and manages the city's major media vehicles including CharlotteNC.gov and CharMeck.org, the government channel and corporate social media sites. CC&M also works with external partners: Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Center City Partners, Charlotte Regional Partnership, the city's environment and energy sustainability partners, and sponsors of extraordinary events and national special security events.

Abstract

The collection consists of a small assortment of papers generated by the City of Charlotte concerning Freedom Park and the Charlotte Coliseum, and a much larger assortment of photographs, mainly of city officials (mayors and city council members from the mid-1960s to the late 1990s). The collection also includes photographs of street scenes (some dating to the 1940s), cityscapes and skylines of Charlotte, as well as city employees at work. Most of the photos were taken by staff photographers, though some were taken by private photography firms, contracted to work for the city.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into the following five series, one of which (Photographs) is further divided into subseries. The five series are: Papers, Photographs, Oversize Photographs, Negatives and Slides.
