Biographical Note - John "Jack" Weil
Jack Weil was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 11, 1937 to Ernest Philip and Marguerite Barrentine Weil. After his father's death, he and his mother left Maryland for Charlotte, North Carolina. He was a Boy Scout, and became the youngest Eagle Scout in Mecklenburg County at that time. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1954, received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959, and later earned an Executive Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University. He was also a member of the United States Air Force. He married Anne Ballenger Weil in 1961 and they had three children: Anna Woodfin Weil (called "Nina"), John Christian Weil, and William Russell Weil. After his college graduation, Weil returned to Charlotte and began working for International Business Machines. He left IBM in 1964 and, after a brief interlude working on the first computers at North Carolina National Bank, co-founded Systems Associates, Inc. As President and later, Chairman of the Board at SAI, he oversaw the company's growth from a small company to one of the country's leading providers of medical software and hardware. Weil retired in 1987 after selling SAI to American Express Information Services. Weil had an active retirement. He spent his time as a passionate amateur photographer and an experienced world traveler and with his wife, children, and eight grandchildren. Like his father before him, Weil struggled with alcoholism. With treatment, he learned to control his addiction and began keeping a daily journal as part of his therapy. Weil died on February 19, 2009 after a period of declining health.
Historical Note - Systems Associates, Inc.
In 1966, John Weil cofounded a software company called Systems Associates, Inc. He served as its president and later as the chairman of the board when SAI became a publically traded company in 1983. SAI made and sold hardware and software to hospitals and clinics. The company's system, SAINT, was one of the most widely respected medical software systems. SAI was bought by American Express Information Services in 1987.
