Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of photographs of scenes throughout Mecklenburg county in the early 20th century, including the first S & W Cafeteria in Charlotte, Henry Fowler's Pepsi truck after falling through a bridge and a luncheon in the Manufacturer's Club.

Biographical / Historical

William Gray Frye was born on January 24, 1905 in Statesville, NC to William Andrew and Nancy Wilhelm Frye. He lived in Charlotte for most of his life and was a member of the Statesville Avenue Baptist Church. He worked as a mechanic for Brown Equipment and Manufacturing Company and was a fifty-year veteran of the International Association of Mechanics and Aeorspace Workers. He died in Charlotte on August 19, 1997.

W.G. Frye's father, William Andrew Frye, operated Frye and Crowell's Garage, the first Ford garage in Charlotte, as well as a wrecker service. W.A. Frye was born on February 3, 1874 in Catawba county, NC and died at his home on Statesville Road in Charlotte on December 22, 1928.

Abstract

Primarily photographs of Mecklenburg County scenes, including the family and the family business, W. A. Frye & Sons Garage, automobile accidents, the first S & W Cafeteria in Charlotte (ca. 1913), and Dr. E. C. Boyette. Also includes a photograph of Steel's Foundry in Statesville. Most of the photographs were used by Kratt in her book, Charlotte: Spirit of the New South, 2nd edition (1992).
