Scope and Contents

The materials document the activities of the Mecklenburg County unit of Church Women United during the years 1982 through 1999. The records consist of scrapbooks, records books and a photo album. The scrapbooks contain booklets, budgets, correspondence, financial statements, membership directories, minutes, newsletters, pamphlets and photographs. The record books contain minutes of general meetings and meetings of the executive committee and executive board. There also is one volume entitled “Pictorial Views” which contains photographs and other materials documenting the activities of Church Women United during the 1990s.

Biographical / Historical

In 1912, a group of Charlotte-area women led by Emma Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church organized the Charlotte Interdenominational Missionary Union. The main activity of the early organization was to support missionary work for victims of leprosy. In 1951, the Union joined the United Church Women’s Organization (later renamed Church Women United) as a member of the organization’s North Carolina state council.

Abstract

Records documenting the activities and interests of the Mecklenburg County (N.C.) chapter of Church Women United, a national, ecumenical Christian women’s community service organization. Consists of record books and scrapbooks containing booklets, budgets, committee lists, correspondence, financial statements, meeting minutes, membership directories, newsletters, pamphlets, and photographs.
