Charlotte City Board of Education records

 Collection
Identifier: MS0001

Scope and Contents

Comprised primarily of minute books (1890-1960) of the Board, with an index for the period 1927-41. Also includes annual report (1891) and pamphlet (1935) supporting a tax levy for schools. The minutes record the proceedings of the meetings and official actions of the Board. Subjects discussed include financial and legal matters, employment of teachers, progress of students, buildings and programs at each school, and reports of the superintendent. Some of the minute books mention Charlotte Center and Charlotte College from around 1948 to around 1958, because it was during that time that the Charlotte Board of Education had jurisdiction over that college. A separate community college system was established in 1958.

Biographical / Historical

The city public school system began in 1880 when voters approved a special school tax and elected a board of school commissioners. Separate schools for white and black children opened in 1882. In 1957, the Board of School Commissioners changed its name to the Charlotte City Board of Education. Three years later, in 1960, the city and county systems combined to form the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. From approximately 1948 to 1958, it was this board that governed Charlotte Center, which later became known as Charlotte College, and still later, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. This jurisdiction ended in 1958, when the North Carolina Community College System was established.
