Scope and Contents

Primarily material relating to the allegation that Abraham Lincoln was the illegitimate son of Abraham Enloe of Rutherford County, N.C. Includes two notarized statements (1939) supporting the allegation that Lincoln was the illegitimate son of Enloe, both written by Catherine Squires and attesting to statements made by the Rev. Ebenezer Myers (minister, Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church) and Mrs. W. W. Dysart (teacher who boarded in the same house as Frank Enloe, Abraham Enloe's grandson). Also includes an unnotarized summary (1939) by Squires of the reminiscences of a Virginia Evans Hammond on the paternity of John C. Calhoun. One other item consists of notes Squires made (1943), with her own commentary, from a book by Judge Felix E. Alley, Random Thoughts and the Meanings of a Mountaineer (1941). Other material is comprised of newspaper clippings (1979, 1998) [The Charlotte Observer "Mecklenburg Neighbors" (10-11-1998) article is about Clegg] and an article from The State (1989).

Biographical / Historical

Lula Faye Clegg was a school teacher for over forty-two years. She taught Civics, American History and World History at Charlotte Technical High School. She was born Oct. 5, 1900 in Cleveland County, NC. She died Jun. 10, 1999 in Charlotte, NC. She never married.
