This collection consists of material related to the work of the Charlotte Yiddish Institute from its founding in 1978 to 2015. It includes correspondence, participant reflections, programs and news articles. There is also a small collection of Yiddish language teaching material. In addition, there is a series of photo albums and scrapbooks showing the Institute over the years.

Biographical / Historical

The Charlotte Yiddish Institute was founded in 1979 by Baila Pransky with help from Abraham Luski, it was an annual event taking place at the Wildacres Retreat, Little Switzerland, NC. It was open to men and women dedicated to enhancing their knowledge and use of the Yiddish language and culture through lectures, workshops, concerts, religious services, etc. The Yiddish Institute offered scholarships to students enrolled in college and university Yiddish studies/language programs and contributed to many national and international Yiddish organizations and publications. It was sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of Charlotte. The Yiddish Institute closed in 2015 after 37 years of operation due to the aging of the Yiddish-speaking community.
