Scope and Contents

The letters (1942-44) are primarily written to Kuester's sister, Adelaide Bostick, with additional letters to his twin brother, Faison, and to his father, Clarence Kuester, Sr. They document living conditions and daily events, as well as insight into Kuester's personal struggles as a soldier near the front lines. Also includes photographs and memorabilia.

Biographical / Historical

Clarence Otto Kuester Jr. of Charlotte joined the U.S. Army 38th Evacuation Hospital Unit as a private in 1942. Comprised primarily of Charlotte doctors and nurses, the 38th Evac served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Kuester had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant by the time of his discharge in 1944.
