Historical Note
The Charlotte Folk Society began in 1982 when Wayne Erbsen, a banjo picker on a North Carolina Arts Council visiting residency, met Marilyn Meacham Price, a homegrown guitarist and square dancer. Erbsen encouraged Price to present traditional music events and she sent out a call to those who shared her love of folk music, which gave birth to the Folk Society. In the 1980s, the Society worked to introduce Charlotteans to traditional Piedmont Carolina music through festivals they held at Latta Park and concerts they sponsored with Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson. They have also hosted cable television and public radio programs as well as coordinated folk instrument classes at CPCC. The Society's major event every year is a public gathering they hold on the second Friday of every month at the Great Aunt Stella center, which includes an hour-long concert, as well as refreshments, socializing and a song circle. In addition to these regular gatherings, there is one gathering each year that showcases youth talent and the Society offers the Marilyn Meacham Price Scholarship, which allows musicians between the ages of 12 and 21 to attend Swannanoa Gathering Folk Arts Workshops.
