Biographical / Historical

On April 30, 2019 a shooting took place in the Kennedy building on the main campus of UNC Charlotte that resulted in the deaths of 2 students and the injury of 4 others. The University cancelled classes on May 1, the day following the shooting, and held a vigil in memory of Riley Howell and Reed Parlier, the two students that were killed and in support of the 4 injured students, Drew Pescaro, Rami Al-Ramadhan, Emily Houpt and Sean DeHart.

Over the following days and weeks, members of the University community began to leave items for the victims, such as cards and candles, in front of the Kennedy building and by the Niner Statue on campus. Additionally, Chancellor Dubois announced the creation of Niner Nation Remembers, a permanent website to document the events of April 30 as well as share ongoing work being done to commemorate the victims of that tragic day. The University also established a 14-member Remembrance Commission headed by Emily Zimmern, whose goal was to decide how best to memorialize the victims and determine the future use of the Kennedy building.
