Sandra Godwin papers concerning the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation

The 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights was a political rally in favor of ending discrimination and giving legal rights to the LGBT community that took place on April 25, 1993 with an estimated 1,000,000 people in attendance. The March sought to build on the spirit of community that had been created in the 1987 March but came during a time when LGBT discrimination was on the rise from policies such as Bill Clinton's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and a spike in LGBT hate crimes.

The March had seven main demands, including a federal LGBT Civil Rights bill, an increase in funding for AIDS education, an end to discrimination against LGBT members of the military and an end to racial and ethnic discrimination in all its forms. In addition to the March itself, there were several other events in and around Washington D.C. that weekend, including two large demonstrations in favor of same-sex marriage and federal recognition of domestic partnerships. Several celebrities and politicians spoke at a rally following the March, including RuPaul, Nancy Pelosi and Madonna.
