Scope and Contents

The Donald B. Rosenthal papers comprise records of Rosenthal's involvement with a range of political and sexual identity organizations since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2000. The bulk of the materials derive from Rosenthal's direct involvement with Mecklenburg Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Political Action Committee (MeckPAC) as well as the Mecklenberg County HIV/AIDS Council. The records date from circa 2005-2013 and include administrative records, correspondence, and printed ephemera.

Biographical note

Donald Rosenthal was born on July 14, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to Max and Dora Rosenthal. After relocating to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, Don Rosenthal, a retired political science professor emeritus from SUNY Buffalo, became active in two LGBT organizations; Mecklenburg LGBT Political Action Committee (MeckPAC) and Equality North Carolina (ENC). Over the years, Rosenthal contributed much to the local and statewide LGBT community. He was previously the vice president of ENC, held a chair position for the foundation and was a dedicated member of the steering committee for MeckPAC. In 2012, Rosenthal was one of the few who worked to re-establish the Charlotte chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), where he served as a member of the board. Don Rosenthal died at his home in Charlotte on December 5, 2014.

Abstract

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into the following three series: MeckPAC, Equality NC and LGBT Subject Files.
