Administrative History

The Charlotte Historic District Commission was established in 1976 by an act of City Council as part of the redevelopment of Fourth Ward. Since then, the Commission's responsibilities have grown beyond Fourth Ward to include design review and enforcement in other designated Local Historic Districts. In addition, the HDC and its Staff provide historic preservation education and technical advice for other local government agencies and the community at large.

The Charlotte Historic District Commission consists of twelve Members appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Under a resolution of City Council, the HDC has representatives who own property, live, or own businesses within the Local Historic Districts. Other Members are appointed at large from the entire community. A majority of the Commission's Members must have some demonstrable expertise or experience in the areas of neighborhood preservation, architecture, planning, history or other areas directly related to the mission of the Historic District Commission.
