Biographical / Historical

One Voice was founded in 1989 when five Charlotteans met to create a chorus of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and LGBT-affirming people. The chorus seeks to showcase diversity through music by performing music from composers all over the world. Additionally, they highlight the works of LGBT composers and create new works of their own. One Voice has partnered with many groups throughout Charlotte and the surrounding area, including Komen for the Cure, Theater Charlotte, RAIN and many schools and churches. The chorus especially seeks to help LGBT causes and has partnered with Time Out Youth, the Charlotte Pride Festival and the Charlotte Lesbian & Gay Fund. Today, One Voice has become the first LGBT organization to be an affiliated member of the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte and has grown from its original number of 25 singers in 1990 to over 70 staff members in 2017.
