Scope and Contents
Primarily papers (1932-34) of Julian H. Little relating to his guardianship of Grace Carpenter of Statesville and including correspondence about the management of the Grace Hotel in Statesville. Also includes correspondence (1946-49) with William Henry Belk, J. B. Ivey, and others concerning Little's presidency of the Independence Corporation and its operation of the Independence Building in uptown Charlotte, as well as a letter from J. B. Ivey conveying his opposition to dancing on religious grounds after an article appeared in Guideposts about Arthur Murray. Much of the collection are photocopies.

Biographical / Historical
Julian Hampton Little was born on May 25, 1865 in Richmond county, North Carolina to John Phillips and Fanny Myers Little. He attended the University of North Carolina in 1888 and afterwards worked for a cotton company for several years. He eventually became Vice President and later President of the Charlotte National Bank. Later in his career he served as President of the Independence Corporation, a lending institution in Charlotte. He also shared an interest with his sister Emma in the family's timber operations at Little's Mill in Richmond county. Julian died on September 12, 1955 in Charlotte.
